Talkin' Trash

So, trash is huge --although for many of us, if it is out of sight, it is out of mind. Nonetheless, we should really think through the life cycle of what we are buying--and very importantly where it goes after we are done with it... NPR offers a bit of insight.

  1. Just Wow. I decided to go through old blogs... watch the films and such and I had to comment on this. I have always been the worst at recycling. My family never bothered and when I was on my own my roommates and I never generated more than 1 can and a half of trash a week. That was between three people so, we figured 'Why bother?'. Now I see why. we never took into account all the boxes every time we moved, all of the packaging the things we bought online came in. I go through electronic like it is my job (I'm cursed) and to think I'm helping to pretty poison those in developing countries. We really don't realize just how much damage we cause - and how easy it could be fixed if we stopped trying to be A) greedy and B) lazy. Everything these days is about the best bang for your buck and what is easiest. Those attitudes only make it so harmful policies are kept in place and so the USA sees no problem in not helping with controlling its hazardous waste exports and being the only developed country to not ratify a treaty that puts an end to exploiting poorer countries and infusing them with our waste.
