Big Sugar, Everglades, and Community Peoples' Lives

The New York Times has a great short documentary on the sugar industry and the Florida Everglades. However, the news that Big Sugar is actually handing over its property so that the Everglades has a chance at some restoration, is not so great for all of the workers that were part of the industry there.

  1. Amanda, you are right, there is still a high concern over people's lives. The scale of the acquisition was cut in half so the Clewiston Mill could stay operational for a longer time-transition period. Restoration takes time which is not all bad since economic transitions take time too. The communities will reform themselves to be less reliant on "big sugar" (kind of like GM communities). Communities will be stronger we all hope and are striving for. The Everglades Restoration, including the restoration our great coastal estuaries, will all too slowly take this next step in this generation, thanks to Governor Crist and many other leaders, hopefully not too late for ecological recovery.
