ANTHONY AVENI TALKS ABOUT MAYAN ARCHAEOASTRONOMY AND THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT
This blogsite is a space to share stories, experiences, conferences, and updates about humans and nature here in Gville, Florida and the world. I hope that students, teachers, friends and residents can use it as a space to share and learn. As a teacher of Environment and Cultural Behavior at UF, a Farmers Market vendor, a Ph.D. candidate in Ecological and Visual Anthropology, and an intrigued resident of North Central Florida, I hope to use this blog to foster conversation and community.
I hope a talk like this happens again before my graduation in 2012! Having taken a class on Native American religions, I've read a bit and seen a bit about various explanations of the Mayan calendar's ending and am tempted to believe it does not signify some catastrophic, apocalyptic event - instead, it represents the start of a new cycle, a new era of life. I think we're in for a change, but not in the end-of-all-human-life sense. Such an interesting topic!
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more! I think that all apocalyptic schools of thought are so interesting to listen to, because there are so many absolutely different ideas. I always love learning what other people believe about one of the biggest potential issues to human life.
